SA 8000

SA 8000 is a globally recognized social accountability standard, created by Social Accountability International (SAI)—not ISO, but often mistakenly called "ISO SA 8000". Despite this, it is compatible with ISO management system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Use of SA 8000

SA 8000 is used by companies to:

  1. Ensure fair and ethical labour practices
    • Addresses child labour, forced labour, working hours, health and safety, etc.
  2. Build a socially responsible supply chain
    • Applies not just internally but also to contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  3. Implement a Social Accountability Management System
    • Similar to ISO systems (e.g., ISO 9001), but focused on social responsibility.
  4. Improve HR and compliance systems
    • Strengthens policies around labour rights, grievance procedures, and worker protections.
  5. Prepare for SA 8000 certification
    • Certification by accredited third parties (like SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV).
